3 Black-Owned Clean Beauty Brands You Need To Know

Title image for blog post

The clean beauty industry continues to expand as consumers seek to find healthier options for themselves and their families. According to a 2019 Harper’s BAZAAR Poll, surveying over 1000 women across all ages, races, and ethnicities, approximately 50 percent of women surveyed already use clean beauty products. It is becoming increasingly easier to find cleaner options at your local store. However, if you are looking for clean beauty products designed for Black skin and darker skin tones, options remain limited.

Although it may take jumping online to find some of these hidden gems, there are definitely clean beauty brands that are ready to meet the challenge. Providing healthier, high-quality products for people of color is a common mission for these great brands. Here are three black-owned beauty brands you need to know.

Mented Cosmetics

When the two founders of Mented Cosmetics, KJ Miller and Amanda Johnson, launched their brand, they had the hope of creating the perfect “nude” lipstick that they couldn’t seem to find anywhere. They set out on a mission to create the classic look for darker skin tones without a chalky or dull appearance. The resourcefulness of these two brilliant Harvard Business School grads would end up filling a gap in the beauty market for the perfect nude look for women of color.

Mented Cosmetics is a full cosmetic line offering a range of product options from lipstick to nail polish. Each product is perfectly “pigMented” for a range of skin tones. An added bonus is that all lipsticks are vegan, paraben-free, non-toxic, and cruelty-free, and I must say that their nude shades are nothing short of perfection. Check it out!

The range of colors offered are curated to provide a strikingly beautiful “natural” look. If you are desiring bold and exotic shades this may not be your cup of tea, however, I think every girl needs the perfect nude color to add to their stash. This also includes pink shades that compliment darker skin tones. Mented Cosmetics can be purchased on line at HSN, Amazon, and MentedCosmetics.com.

Range Beauty

Range Beauty

After years of working in the fashion industry and experiencing difficulty with limited shades available on photoshoots, Range Beauty founder, Alicia Scott, decided to create her own product line to meet this need. She envisioned a black-owned clean beauty brand that offered more diverse cosmetic shades made with non-toxic ingredients. Her personal struggles with acne and eczema helped to influence her creative vision as she sought to meet two needs with one product solution.

Range Beauty was created with those who suffer from acne and eczema in mind. This line offers an array of foundation colors, powders, and primers that are the initial step in creating any look. The range of color options makes it easy to find the perfect match for your skin tone and they have the added benefit of protecting sensitive skin. Ingredients like french clay, calendula flower, and chamomile treat and nourish the skin. These natural ingredients help to reduce irritation and inflammation often caused by acne, eczema, and other skin conditions. Products are dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, and free of talc, mineral oil, parabens, phthalates, fragrance, and synthetic dyes, solidifying its place in the clean beauty market.

You can purchase Range Beauty online on their company website. To help with the color selection, they offer an online database where you can match a color from another brand to the Range Beauty line to find the perfect shade. If all else fails, you can order up to four foundation samples to try. I am sure that you will find one that fits perfectly.

If you are looking for a variety of high-pigmented lip shades for every occasion that also meets your clean beauty needs, look no further than The Lip Bar.  The Lip Bar offers a full makeup line that is non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty-free.  Products are formulated with natural ingredients such as jojoba oil and coconut oil with a short ingredient list which is not common among big beauty brands.

When the founder, Melissa Butler, launched The Lip Bar in 2012, she worked as a financial analyst and created products in her kitchen. You may have even seen her pitch on Shark Tank, where this brilliant concept fell flat on investors. Side noteā€¦ I watched that episode and cringed from the comments and critique they received. Thank goodness they did not let that experience stop their pursuit. Little did those investors know that in no time flat, The Lip Bar would land in over 450 Target stores with a company flagship store located in Detroit, Michigan that opened in 2019.

This black-owned clean beauty brand was designed to deliver bold color for Black skin tones in the form of safe, non-toxic, and affordable cosmetic products. The colors remain vibrant when applied to the skin and feel weightless and moisturizing. If you are like me and don’t spend much time on makeup sessions, their Fast Face Kit is just what the doctor ordered. It is a complexion curated collection of essential items you will need for a flawless face. The Lip Bar is available online, at Target, and of course at their flagship store.

Now that you are in the know, I hope you will check out one of these black-owned clean beauty brands. As for me, I’m about to place my next order.
